Obviously, Gilligan was a huge goofball on the show. He always messed around, which begs one to ask, why in the world did Skipper keep him around? Clearly, Gilligan could be very annoying. The real reason goes back to when the two sailors were in the Navy during WWII. That’s when Gilligan saved Skipper’s life from a deadly depth charge! So, thanks to the lovable goof, Skipper got some extra years!
