In real life, the assassination of JFK just happened right before they began filming. In fact, they finished filming the pilot November 22 of 1963. That’s the day President John F. Kennedy was shot.

Inside Joke
Back during the show, Newton Minow was the head of the FCC, Federal Communications Commission. Anyway, the creator of Gilligan’s Island (and The Brady Bunch), Sherwood Schwartz hated him. Thus, as an inside joke with the crew, he named the shipwreck the S.S. Minnow. Maybe Newton never caught on?
