12 Years A Slave
New York State-born Solomon Northup was kidnapped and sold into slavery, even though he was born to free slaves. For 12 years, he was held captive and forced to work at a plantation in Louisiana. He penned his entire ordeal until a Canadian working on the same plantation got his story to New York, where Governor Washing Hunt helped him return to the Big Apple and live in freedom. What’s shocking is that Northup’s captors never received any punishment.
