Taking the Backseat

Before she became the Marisa Tomei we know and love, she struggled a bit in the early part of the nineties. Burnt out, she took the backseat and auditioned for smaller parts. These minor roles included movies like Dirk and Betty, King of the Jungle, The Watcher, Happy Accidents and What Women Want. Tomei continued this pattern until the early years of the 2000s. Even taking a part in Sandler’s Anger Management!

Combating Controversy

No one eases through Hollywood without some controversy. Tomei butted heads with some of the most powerful people in the business. Saturday Night Live drafted her in to guest host in October 1994. Things turned sour between Tomei and the SNL writers and producers when she asked to pull the sketch she filmed called Good Morning Brooklyn. Tomei feared the skit promoted a negative stereotype of her. Though, since the show is a famously satirical one, many argued that was the point.
