In January 1954, the upgrade was completed. The USS Stickleback cruised to Yokosuka, Japan. This was her new homeport as the Cold War raged on. The submarine was now deployed to do reconnaissance and keep an eye on the Soviets. Sadly, this turned out to be its downfall when all was said and done.

Its First Cold War Mission

The sub went on its first mission in the Cold War in late March 1954. The vessel went on a trip that took four weeks. It crossed the Tsugaru Strait in the Pacific into the waters that bordered Korea and Japan. It was a surveillance mission as it was tasked to record and document the Soviet vessels in these waters.
