They Were Safe In The Meantime
It was a good thing that the crew managed to deploy its emergency ballast tanks right away. The sub rose through the water and reached the surface. For now, the crew and the sub were safe. However, this was not yet the end of the story. The vessel surfaced only 600 feet from the Silverstein’s prow!

Too Late To Stop It
The bad news is that Navy destroyers can’t do sudden emergency stops, much less within 600 feet. Even though the crew of the Silverstein tried its hardest, they failed to stop the destroyer from plowing into the port side of the sub and left a huge gash in the hull. Luckily, this accident did not have any casualties.
