The Balao subs were made with the highest level of craftsmanship, so we are not all that surprised to hear that they were staples of the war. The USS Balao, the first of the class, was deployed in October 1942. This vessel was an improvement on the old Gato submarine class. The Balaos were all named after fish species. However, this did not stop the USS Stickleback from the massive impact that it had.
