Costner is not the type of person to deny that his love life was a mess after he and Cindy got a divorce. “I was like the classic single guy — who do I love this week, who next week?” the Dances With Wolves actor explained. When he started going out with Christine, things went in the opposite direction. At long last, it seemed like the free-spirited man was finally ready to settle down a second time. Sadly, Costner was not ready to have kids with his beau at the time and the two briefly broke up in 2002.

He Was Afraid
When he went back to being a single man, Costner realized that it was a mistake to end things with Christine. “Fear kept me from marrying Christine,” Costner elaborated. “[She] wanted a child, but I was afraid I couldn’t be an effective father.” After four years together, the actor explained, “I woke up and thought, ‘Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child?’ That’s all it took.”
