We all know how scary the ocean can be. Scratch that, it is nothing short of terrifying when you consider that we’ve barely scratched its surface. The fact that it constitutes two-thirds of Earth only adds to its overall enigmatic quality. Up until now, explorers and scientists are still continuously finding new deep-sea creatures and they are bizarre, to say the least. The ones that we do know about are the stuff of nightmares! Aside from these animals, the ocean is a force to be reckoned with in itself. Let’s not forget how many cities the water has engulfed and left in ruins. The following photos of the ocean will surely give you goosebumps so we hope you are ready! Tsunamis and hurricanes are probably the first things that come to mind whenever one hears of natural disasters. As we all know by now, a tsunami is definitely a frightening phenomenon. It is nothing like the waves that we encounter while swimming on a fine summer day. Tsunamis come at you with a scary amount of speed and impact! You might even mistake its force for that of solid rock, that’s how strong they are. Trust us when we say that there is a gigantic difference between tidal waves and tsunamis. We might be fond of the fishes we see on a regular basis, but go deeper and you will be shocked at the difference. Deep ocean dwellers become stranger the deeper you go. There is no denying that some of them are strikingly beautiful, but others are just as unsightly and a handful are completely horrific. However, the age-old wisdom is true: the beautiful ones often pose more danger. The lionfish, octopus, and jellyfish might be wonderful to look at but the fact that they are deadly often catches starstruck viewers off-guard. And how can we talk about the ocean without mentioning sharks?
We have all seen Jaws, right? These mighty creatures are known to be the king of the seas for a good reason. When you consider the fact that there are more than 440 species, we’re certainly not out here to compete with them for the rule of the waters. Whales, meanwhile, require a whole conversation dedicated to these giants. The following pictures in the slideshow will definitely make you rethink our place in the universe. You might want to reconsider if you believe that we are the sole ruler of the planet. These photos will remind you of the vastness of the ocean and the fact we’re mere guests when we are in the water.
Cage Fight
Cage diving alongside sharks sounds like an exciting prospect, doesn’t it? Would you be feeling the same way if we let you know that sometimes, the sharks enter the cage? We doubt you would still be up for it then.
It’s not a common occurrence but none of the former participants have recommended it. After all, none of them has lived to tell the tale!
The Underworld
Nope, this is not the set for a fantasy movie! This is a real place underwater.
In fact, there are plenty of water caves under sea level just like this one. Yes, they are all chilling to look at. Just imagine what it must be like when you encounter one yourself!
What Lurks Beneath
Ah, kayaking by yourself sounds like the perfect way to obtain some much-needed me-time!
However, don’t fool yourself into thinking that you are completely on your own. The shark creeping up behind your kayak would beg to differ.
Sea Snakes
Okay, we know that this looks like a close-up shot of an elderly man’s head. We’re sorry to break it to you, but it is actually a seabed full of sea snakes!
It’s fascinating to look at, but these are deadly creatures. Also, to answer your question: nope, they are not fixed to the sea floor.
Just A Humpback Whale
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a humpback whale is a gentle creature just because it is a mammal! Remember that these animals still live in the water.
At this point, we’re just lucky that this man had been able to get up close and personal with this creature. Apparently, he was able to accomplish the feat unharmed so kudos to him!
No Air
Are you interested in free-diving? If you ask me, going under the water without any breathing equipment sounds a bit too risky.
However, you might want to join in on the fun if you consider yourself a daring person. After all, there must be a reason why more and more people are getting into it!
Jellyfish Trouble
This here is called the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish. Anyone with decent reading comprehension skills can see how it got its name.
This huge sea creature has multiple stingers that can actually extend up to 20 feet. If those numbers mean nothing to you, consider this: the average human is only 5 feet tall!
Whale Shark
You would be mistaken if you think that the creature below is a tiny fish.
Quite the contrary, the whale shark is actually the largest shark you will find in the ocean! We’re relieved to know that it generally poses no harm to us humans.
Reflection And Ray
We all know that the calm ocean is the place to relax and reflect. Meditating in the still ocean seems to be working for this lady right here!
We wonder if she’ll be able to remain zen when she opens her eyes and finds herself face to face with this stingray!
Cave Of Death
Yikes, imagine running into this sign while doing some serious diving! Creepy, right?
It’s safe to say that we will not take it for granted if we ever run across this sign.
Creepy Crawlies
What is that? We can hear your mind racing with ideas. Could these be sea snakes? Electric eels?
The Flying Spaghetti Monster? Nope. These are actually seaweed carried by a wave! That doesn’t sound too scary, but we’re not particularly eager to swim in those waters.
Jacob’s Well
If you’re headed to Texas, you might be interested in checking out Jacob’s Well. It sounds like the stuff of legends and daredevils can go all the way down to its depth of 4,500 feet.
We know how alluring it sounds, but we recommend being extremely careful! It has been reported that 8 people died while exploring its mystic waters.
Sea Centipede
You’re right if you think that it looks just like a fake mustache.
However, you are actually looking at a gigantic centipede! We already hate coming into contact with the regular variety, so just imagine how awful it must be to come across this thing while swimming.
For Real?
We have yet to confirm if this photo was manipulated or not but we sure hope it isn’t real!
Just take a look at that thing! If something of this size was lurking in the waters, we have a gigantic problem on our hands.
Not What You Want To See
This must be one of the worst nightmares of any surfer! Just imagine mounting your surfboard and coming across this silhouette!
We hope that the man in the photo was able to get away safely.
Vampire Squid
That might sound like a gag name, but this creature is actually real.
It might look adorable, but this is one creature that you should run away from if you ever spot it. It received its name for a reason, after all!
Tsunami
Living right by the sea sounds like the dream, doesn’t it? Imagine the cool air, the lovely view, the calming sounds, and the opportunity to swim whenever you wish.
However, there are times when it is far less than ideal. The occasional tsunamis are powerful enough to ruin nearby structures and kill all of their inhabitants in a matter of hours.
Brave Surfer
While participating in a surfing competition held in South Africa, Mick Fanning ran into some trouble.
The Australian professional surfer was attacked by a great white shark! It’s a good thing that he kept his wits about him. He was able to save himself by punching the creature! Bad-ass.
Time To Get Out
It must have been a nice sunny day when this photo was taken. However, we bet that the people in the photo were unaware of their toothy companion.
Fun fact: shallow waters actually make for great hunting grounds for sharks. Sure, this one is smaller than usual but you’d be a fool to risk it!
Underwater Waterfall
It’s pretty mind-blowing but underwater waterfalls exist! Crazy, we know.
It is nothing short of breathtaking but it’s actually pretty dangerous. This specific body of water is located near Mauritius.
The Blobfish
Look at this thing. Pitiful, isn’t it? We could not have come up with a more accurate name for this poor creature.
It looks just like a slimy blob but it’s actually a living, breathing sea creature. While it’s not exactly terrifying, it’s not a sight for sore eyes either.
Perfect Timing
Mad props to the photographer for their excellent timing! This happened a split-second before the great white shark exercised its ferocious bite.
If they had blinked, they would have taken a photograph of the moment it went came out of the water to take a bite of its prey.
Thailand Tsunami
You probably remember the tsunami that rocked Southeast Asia just after Christmas 2004.
The fatalities reached a total of 170,000 people. It was a terrifying disaster caused by an underwater earthquake. It was so strong that the tremors were able to affect even the waters of East Africa.
Death At Sea
We’ll all heard of the tradition called burial at sea, but this is not exactly the same thing.
After all, the aforementioned ritual involves taking out the bodies to the sea. The picture depicts a more proactive ocean that seems to be eager to get to the remains of the dead!
Massive Waves
Surfers and swimmers are always eager to head out and catch big waves, but this is a photo worth keeping in mind.
Above average waves might be great for recreational activities, but waves of this size can even overturn ships and destroy buildings!
Don’t Blink
The ocean has plenty of recreational activities to offer thrill seekers but swimming right above a great white shark is taking it a little too far.
We can only hope that the person in the photograph was able to swim away to safety at some point!
Flying Whale
No, that’s not a particularly weird-looking bird. It is, however, a whale that seems to have learned how to fly!
We can only imagine how shocked the photographer must have been at that moment.
8 Reasons To Swim Away
Aren’t octopi pretty? However, it is imperative to keep in mind that they can be very dangerous.
Stay away from them when you are diving! Many people have been the unfortunate victims of the clinginess of these creatures. They sometimes wrap themselves around humans and end up ripping off their diving gear and equipment!
Nose Job Shark
Perhaps this fellow here isn’t the most handsome creature the sea has ever seen, but it’s still an impressive sight to see.
However, we don’t recommend getting up close with this animal if you value your life!
Leopard Seal
This guy here is adorable but as the old adage goes, don’t judge a book by its cover.
A bite from this leopard seal will definitely draw blood. Just take a look at those teeth! We all know that nothing good can come out of bleeding while in the water.
Great White
The person who is hovering right above the great white shark is in great danger at the moment this photo was taken.
But we don’t need to tell you that, do we? Let’s just hope that they were able to escape the nasty situation they were in.
Be Safe
We all know that eels are rather unusual creatures. You might have even heard that they are dangerous!
It’s a good thing we only know this from secondhand experience, unlike the guy in this photo.
Sucking It In
We know what you’re thinking: that whale shark looks just like a vacuum cleaner!
Let’s hope that wasn’t actually the case and that the diver was able to escape just before it swallowed him whole.
Double The Size
We saw this exact same scenario earlier, so perhaps there is hope that the kayaker is safe!
But that might just be our optimism speaking. We won’t believe that he was able to run away until we see evidence of the aftermath!
Lava And Ocean
Strong waves are usually enough reason to worry, so what more when it is combined with an erupting volcano?
Let’s hope there were no casualties! On the flip side, this phenomenon could lead to the creation of new earth. How cool is that?
When You See It
This is a pretty neat photo of a little boat sailing across the sea! Until you see that silhouette, that is.
Once you see the hint of the blue whale underneath, things no longer seem as calm as they used to!
Even Deeper
Wow. This photo is chilling for several reasons. It’s already incredibly bold of this diver to swim without bringing an oxygen tank.
However, posing like she is heading into that dark hole is giving us some major goosebumps!
Basking Shark
Not all sharks are built the same way. For instance, this basking shark is very different from the great white shark.
They are both heavy eaters, but its distant cousin much prefers chewing its meals with a set of sharp teeth.
Feeding Whales
It’s a pretty flashy sign, but you know that you are in a good fishing spot when this happens!
The sight of a family of humpback whales enjoying dinner must have been both scary and fascinating. Just compare the size of their boat to the size of the fishing boat!
Don’t Touch It
It’s definitely lovely to look at but we warn anyone who feels the need to touch it!
In general, refrain from making contact with all kinds of jellyfish. To date, scientists are still learning new shocking things about these incredible creatures!
Too Close For Comfort
This man was probably expecting to see some nice views. Instead, he got a close encounter with the world’s largest shark!
Hey, at least it will make a good story to tell his future grandkids.
Just Look At That Size
It’s no secret that ships are large floating structures, but we bet you haven’t had the chance to look at them from the bottom.
It’s amazing how this ship’s turbine completely dwarfs the diver standing right beside it!
Between Mother And Calf
Regardless of the species, we all know that it is difficult, even dangerous, to approach a baby when their mother is nearby. Maternal instincts are universal.
This man right here put his life in danger when he approached this mama whale and her baby. Not to mention the fact that he did this without carrying any diving equipment!
Looks Cute
This photo is giving us some very mixed feelings. On one hand, that little kid is simply adorable!
However, the image of the dark water beneath his floater is creeping us out! We’ll just pretend that the bottom half image doesn’t exist, thanks.
Dark Dolphin
A lot of people are fond of dolphins because they are sweet, intelligent creatures.
This one is probably an exception. We’d be running for our lives if this one swam up to us!
Hope For The Best
If you ever find yourself in this position, all you can do is pray hard that the whale passes through under your boat.
You would be in very big trouble if it decided to jump up at you!
Shark Paradise
Let’s pretend that you went for a dive and looked up to see this terrifying sight!
One shark is frightening enough, just imagine how scary it must be to find an entire school hovering above you.
A Speck
Take a closer look at the photo if you didn’t understand what it was. Still don’t get it? It’s actually a photo of a person entering the water!
This is already a scary image without any sea creatures in sight. Just what lies in the darkness of the ocean? It is also both refreshing and scary to see ourselves from a new perspective.
On The Ray-dar
Yikes! We are certainly glad for the person who took the photo. We bet they were just as glad they weren’t in the water when this happened.
It’s a good thing that stingrays only look like they have wings.
Lucky Shot
The land down under has already earned a reputation for its crazy fauna. This extends to their sea creatures as well, apparently.
This photo was taken by French artist Robert Serrec while visiting Hook Island, Queensland in the year 1964. Its authenticity remains unverified, but we sure hope that this snake-like creature isn’t real.
A Deep Grave
Thrill seekers will likely get a kick out of this photo. The Blue Springs Vent in Florida is home to an alluring cave.
Do we really need to tell you how risky diving down here is? It has been reported that 12 people have died while exploring it but that hasn’t stopped daredevils from going in.
Dream Or Nightmare
Surfers are probably jealous of the guy in the photo. How many of us can claim that they were able to ride such a gigantic wave?
Let’s hope that the guy in the photo knows what he’s doing, however. Such a huge wave can cause a ton of damage if one is inexperienced!
Summer Job
How would you feel if you were tasked to operate this lighthouse?
That sounds like a cool job, but we’re sure that the position comes with a lot of difficulties… Do you think they’ll send you there via helicopter if you take the offer?
Terrifying
The word “school” can conjure some pretty scary memories. We’re not talking about the academic sort, however!
We applaud the courage of the photographer. You must be very brave if you are willing to do this in order to get the perfect shot.
Who Lives In A Yellow Submarine?
We all know that one famous song about a yellow submarine. But can you imagine actually running into one while exploring the ocean?
It would be pretty creepy, to say the least. Who knows what you’ll find inside?
From A Different Era
It might have been decades since World War Two, but more and more relics from that period are being discovered all over the world.
Take this sunken plane here, for example. Do you think the pilot was able to jump before the aircraft crashed?
Exploring The Depths
Whoa! This looks like something right from a movie, doesn’t it? Man, don’t you wish you were the diver?
Those underwater boulders must have been even more beautiful in person.
When You See It
You probably thought this was a simple picture of the calm sea, but think again.
Take a closer look and you’ll find something else. Have you seen what we’re talking about?
Under Antarctica
People are rightfully worried about the melting ice caps, but the phenomenon has also lead to some curious finds.
It’s not exactly the Titanic, but this sunken and frozen yacht was found just off Antarctica.
Are They Real?
Don’t worry, these figures are actually works of art. Nonetheless, the sculptures are pretty creepy.
We bet that some unsuspecting divers must have freaked out when they spotted these!
Minute Snorkler
There’s just something about photos taken from underneath. Just take a look at this hauntingly beautiful image of a person floating in the water.
The snorkeler is nothing more than a speck in the ocean!
Freedive Devil
Diving itself is already a scary prospect for most people, so just how brave do you have to be to go underneath without any breathing aid?
Let’s not forget the fact that the person in the photograph decided to head somewhere as dark as this hole.
Underwater River
Are you confused about what you’re seeing? We understand the confusion. This is actually a photograph of an underwater river.
Creepy, isn’t it? The whole place looks like zombies will come out and grab you.
Would You Have A Seat?
Creepy things do not always have to be proactively terrifying. Sometimes, the terror lies in the unexplained silence.
Take this chair for example. There is absolutely no reason for a chair to be on the ocean floor but there it is anyway.
Nuked Fish
Have you heard that there are 8-foot long catfish in the waters of Chernobyl?
A lot of people speculate that it has something to do with the radiation after the nuclear accident. It’s definitely plausible if you ask us.
Man O War
Here is yet another beautiful but deadly creature you’ll find in the ocean.
The Man O’ War jellyfish might look like a floating plastic bag but a peek underneath the surface will show you its true colors. You’ll find its tentacles poised to sting so make sure to stay far, far away from them.
Massive Wave
The real surfers know that the huge waves worth catching are the ones further out to the sea.
Tidal waves like this one make ships look like they weight nothing. The ones you see on the beach don’t even compare to this one!
What Was That?
We all hate the feeling of something brushing our legs while we are in the water.
Can you imagine how this woman must have felt when she felt something touch her? We hope that nothing bad happened moments after this photo was taken.
Thalassophobia Or Claustrophobia?
Yikes! This place is definitely the worst nightmare of anyone suffering from both thalassophobia and claustrophobia.
We’re glad that the diver doesn’t fear the sea or closed spaces. Good for them!
Surf Faster
Windsurfing is a fun activity if you are willing to go wherever the wind takes you.
However, if you spot a whale heading your way, you might want to start praying that the breeze takes you in the opposite direction.
And Then This
Diving is a great activity for eager explorers but sometimes you just don’t know what to make of the things you see.
Take this… thing, for example. What the hell is that even supposed to be?!
Stalking The Police
Police officers have no immunity when it comes to harassment in the ocean. But maybe these guys are different.
After all, they’re Australian! Maybe this is just another regular day for them.
Wall Of Water
We understand if your immediate reaction is disbelief, but this is not a photo manipulation.
It might seem shocking but a wave this huge is actually possible. Don’t even think about catching a wave of this size if you want to live to see another day!
Caught Fishing
The fishermen who took this photo must have been enjoying a good catch until they ran into this fellow!
The shark in the photo got trapped in the net and let’s just say that these creatures are not the forgiving sort.
Photo Roll
The story goes that a group of friends was going out for a surf with a waterproof camera.
It was only when they returned home that they saw this one shot. Whew! It’s a good thing they were able to make it home with all limbs intact.
A Visitor
Heavy rains are a pain, especially if you live in a town that is prone to flooding.
What’s worse is the fact that it sometimes drags unwanted visitors like this guy over here.
Is It A Rock?
Whatever you do, do not hop on to this rock! It is, in fact, not a rock at all.
We’re not sure what it is, but anything with a pair of eyes and a mouth will not appreciate being stepped on!
Hammerhead Sharks
Their misshapen heads are their most distinctive features, but surely their personalities make up for it.
Kidding! We don’t actually have any clue if that’s true. What we do know, however, is that you should stay far away from this place.
Angler Fish
Take a look at this, er, majestic creature here. It might not be a pleasant sight but the angler fish is an incredibly smart predator.
Why do we say that? Well, they actually have a small light that attracts smaller fish. When these smaller species come closer, they end up becoming the main course!
