One rumor that flew around was that actor Alan Young was the producer’s first choice to play Gilligan. You know Young as Wilbur Post on Mister Ed. Anyway, Sherwood cleared up the confusion years after. He claimed he had no idea where people heard that from since they didn’t even consider Young for the part.

At the start, they considered adding a child actor to be The Professor’s nephew. Eventually, they decided against this for one particular reason. Since Gilligan was so childlike at heart, the show simply did not need to add a child actor! Interesting.
