A year later, she again had broken the barrier when she appeared in the cover of the French Elle. Johnson eventually became a successful actress. In 2014, Johnson authored an article in Vanity fair about Bill Cosby about drugging her in the 80s. After that, she wrote her memoir entitled The Face That Changed It All.

She was known for her portrayal of the character Tara Martin in the well-known soap opera All My Children in the 1970s. She portrayed the role for four years until 1974. Her most prominent role was in Saturday Night Fever as Stephanie Mangano starred alongside John Travolta.
