Sally Ride
Sally Ride became famous as the first American woman to fly in space, but only after her death was it revealed she was also the first known LGBT astronaut. Sadly, she passed away from pancreatic cancer in July 2012. Ride had been with her partner, Tam O’Shaughnessy for 27 years. Now, science writer O’Shaughnessy serves as Chair of the Board and Chief Executive Officer for the Board of Sally Ride Science. Thus, the company and Ride’s sister confirmed their relationship, but said Ride wanted keep her personal life private, including her illness.
Jim Parsons
Of course, everyone knows Jim Parsons for his role as Sheldon Cooper on The Big Bang Theory. During his profile interview with the New York Times while starring in the Broadway show, Harvey, he came out publicly. The article just stated ‘Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship.’ In 20103, Jim Parsons referred to his relationship as, “an act of love, coffee in the morning, going to work, washing the clothes, taking the dogs out—a regular life, boring love.” Parsons and partner Todd Spiewak married in May of 2017.
