Back in 1967, Freeman got a big break when he got to act in the off-Broadway with Viveca Lindfors in the play called The Nigger Lovers.

The play focused on the time of the “Freedom Riders” during the civil rights era. However, Freeman made his true debut on Broadway when he starred in the very first all-African American production of Hello, Dolly! with Cab Calloway and Pearl Bailey!
