When Nadia Comăneci went back to her home country Romania, she was treated like a national hero. In the history of the country, no other athlete had ever achieved what she had. Nicolae Ceaușescu, the president during that time, awarded her the “Sickle and Hammer Gold Medal”, honoring her with the title “Hero of Socialist Labor.” Rumors even spread that her family had been given a car and one full month off from work by the government.
