The Romanian government was afraid that Nadia would defect also and that their star athlete would go somewhere else, so they banned Nadia from traveling to other countries. Her letters and phone calls were monitored and screened. She had no freedom or privacy. The only time that they allowed her to travel out of the country was when she went to Cuba and some European countries to compete.

In 1984, Nadia made a daring move when she made a decsion to retire from gymnastics. However, this decision meant she was only retiring from being a gymnast, not with being involved in the sport. Nadia became a coach for the gymnastics team of Romania. However, this would bring Nadia to a difficult position at future competitions.
