Two Winners
After her sublime performance, it was time to attend the awards ceremony. A pair of silver cups were presented to a pair of male and female talented gymnasts. Nadia Comăneci earned one with gracious humility, while the other cup went to the American gymnast Bart Conner. This was their first time meeting each other, and it would turn out to be a life-changing event for them both.

As the two stellar athletes modeled with medals, photographers gathered around the pair to take photos. One of the photographers shouted out, “Kiss for the cameras, please!” Then barely 18-year-old Bart Conner leaned over and chastely kissed Nadia, who was 14 years old at the time, on the cheek. The pair made quite a cute picture, and this shot firmly planted Nadia in America’s heart.
