If you are observing clouds outside and notice long streaks of rotating clouds expanding into the thunderstorm, avoid getting distracted by its snake-like appearance and head for shelter right away. It is better if you stay away from the windows since a tornado might be on its way. The streaks are known as “inflow bands” and the presence often indicates a brewing storm drawing in low-level air. They typically go to the south or the southeast of the storm and hang pretty low in the sky. Professional storm spotters often take them to mean that a tornado will form soon.
