Skiing is a great way to spend an afternoon – until an avalanche goes down, of course. This phenomenon is difficult to escape since the snow normally moves as fast as 80 miles per hour. It does not help that people also tend to sink in the snow. When you notice the signs beforehand, however, you can get yourself to safety. When you walk on snow, ask yourself if it feels hollow or if you hear a “whumping” sound beneath your feet. Inspect for cracks in the snow as well. It is also worth remembering that extreme change in temperatures will likely cause an avalanche.

When it has been raining a lot and you notice the water level of a river or stream rising, it likely means that a flood is on the way. The water will likely be muddy or brownish since the quick-moving water often erodes the surrounding debris and sediment. When you are driving at the time a flood occurs, try to stay out of the water. Simply turn around and head in a different direction. The water might only be two feet deep, but it could still put you in danger. Trust us, it will be better to stay out of it than stay there.
