Carol Leifer, writer for Seinfeld, got her inspiration for “The Lip Reader” from listening to Howard Stern speak with deaf comedian Kathy Buckley on his show. Leifer explained in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Crying: Lessons from a Life in Comedy, “It made me think that, were she a friend of mine, how I would have mined that superhero skill for personal gain!” That’s how she thought of the hilarious idea of George bringing a deaf woman to lip-read his girlfriend’s lips at a party to find out what she’s saying about him.

Hold Your Applause

Once Kramer became a beloved character, the applause grew at his entrances. However, this applause became so loud and long, that the cast began complaining it ruined their scenes’ pacing. Thus, directors requested that the audience try not to applaud as much when Kramer came in.
