Maybe you recall that the characters got radio transmissions from a Packard Bell AM radio. In order to make things a bit more believable, they added a telescoping antenna. Perhaps, that made it more realistic for receiving long distance messages. In reality, that model did not have a handle or antenna.

Inventive Prop Team
As we know, most of the story lines included the cast making technology with found scraps. Clearly, this proved a challenge for the prop team on the show. They would have to come up with wild inventions that were made from a collection of only a few random things. It’s like Macgyvering, only they came before that!
