Its Last Radio Message
In fact, the radio message from February 25th had been the last time they heard from the sub. The vessel was expected to reach Midway Atoll on March 7th, 1944. However, it was nowhere in sight on that day. They were alarmed when the sub did not appear even three weeks after that. The authorities did not have any choice but to announce that the vessel and its 80 crewmen had been lost at sea. This was declared on March 30th. What could have possibly happened to the vessel?

It Seemingly Vanished Into Thin Air
It looks like dozens of men just vanished into thin air. Their loved ones were devastated and wanted to know the truth. Sadly, they did not find a trace of the sub that was once a big asset to the Navy. The Grayback, as well as the team aboard it, played a big role in many battles during the Second World War. It must have helped that the vessel was built at Groton, Connecticut’s Electric Boat Company.
