Checking The Files In Japan
We will now return to Taylor and his work on the Grayback. As the team looked for this sub, the explorer reached out to a Japanese researcher called Yutaka Iwasaki, who was asked to check the files at the Sasebo base. It was formerly used by the Japanese Imperial Navy during the Second World War. These records came with daily radio updates from Naha, which was the location of a Japanese naval air facility.

It Was A Huge Error
Iwasaki then got to work and discovered the important single-digit error in the files. The mistake was present in the transcribed report that was sent to Sasebo from Naha on February 27th, 1944. This was only a few days after the Grayback had returned to base for the very last time. This relevant message talked about the attack made by a Nakajima B5n bomber that took off from one of the aircraft carriers.
