In June 1945, the Stickleback left for Pearl Hawaii. It arrived in Hawaii after a journey of six days. After that, it went through several training runs before it was deployed to Apra Harbor in Guam on the Pacific. The US had retrieved the island from the hands of the Japanese after a bitter fight in August 1944.

The Stickleback left Apra on August 6th, 1945. It was its first wartime journey in the Sea of Japan. This was the same day that the Americans bombed Hiroshima with the first atomic bomb. After three days, it was followed by a second detonation over Nagasaki. It caused the collapse of Japanese resistance, which led to its surrender. They declared a ceasefire on August 15th. But what did it mean for the vessel?
