Their Cargo Ship Had Gone Down

The men aboard these rafts had been the survivors of a Japanese cargo ship called the Teihoku Maru. USS Jallao, another American Balao-class sub, torpedoed the freighter to its watery death on August 11th. This took place only four days prior to the ceasefire. This group of men managed to climb aboard the makeshift rafts. They got lucky, but 27 of the other crew members died when the ship sank.

The Team Rescued The Sailors

The Stickleback saved these merchant sailors by giving them medical attention and food. After a journey of eighteen hours, the mariners returned to their rafts off a Korean island called Ulleungdo. They knew that they could land safely there. After delivering the team of nineteen men, the Stickleback was on its way to Guam and, later, to San Francisco. This was when it met its ultimate fate.
