Perhaps you were not aware, but two girls played the character Carrie Ingalls. Twins Sidney and Lindsay Greenbush played Carrie. The only reason they used two actresses was to follow the laws. The Little House on the Prairie director wanted to avoid violating child labor laws. While the crew shot the famous opening credits scene one of the twins accidentally tumbled down the hill. Actually, the director loved the way the shot turned out and used it in what became an iconic opening credit scene.

Actress Karen Grassle played Ma or more formally known as Caroline Ingalls. While auditioning Grassle used a completely different name. At that time her stage name was Gabriel Tree. Can you imagine? Landon was not having it. He advised the actress to switch back to her real name since he thought the stage name Gabriel Tree was too odd and hippie sounding.
