Alcohol On Set

Unfortunately, much of the Little House on the Prairie cast battled addiction with alcohol and drugs. Unsurprisingly, there was often a lot of alcohol on the set. Everyday the crew finished off two cases of Coors beer. On harder days, they called them “three-case days” to justify drinking more on the set. Actor Michael Landon especially took to drinking, and in Melissa Gilbert’s autobiography, she admitted she didn’t realize how much he was consuming. Apparently, he spiked soft drinks and coffee with vodka, thus, no one really knew how much he was drinking both on-set and off.

Michael Landon Was Jewish Unlike His Character

People remember the heavily Christian message on Little House on the Prairie. However, actor Michael Landon identified as Jewish, despite playing a Christian. Although his stage name is Michael Landon, he was born Eugene Maurice Orowitz. Landon’s mother was actually Catholic and named Peggy O’Neill, but his father, Eli Maurice Orowitz was born Jewish. Landon considered himself culturally Jewish, but he didn’t take part in any organized religion. He expressed a belief in God, but identified as culturally Jewish. Some saw this as strange, but remember, being Jewish is not strictly about religion like Christianity.
