It was only in 1987, while she was at a party, that Nadia had a glimpse of her first opportunity at escape. She met quite an interesting guy named Constantin Panait, who claimed that he had defected to the US from Romania. In addition, he said he had gotten a US citizenship. Nadia had no clue how much Panait would change her life—for better and worse

The Only Chance
Because Panait had been able to show proof of being an American citizen, Nadia trusted him. In spite of it being risky, she made up her mind to follow him as well as attempt to get out of Romania. They were successful in doing so in 1989 by sneaking into Hungary first, and then Austria. In the end, they made it to the United States, actually by first flying through Canada. Only weeks after the two landed in the US, the Romanian Revolution overthrew the government.
