Worse than making a decision to leave her home was having to bid her family goodbye. Nadia was worried her mother might suffer from a heart attack, though her brother told Nadia to calm down and to follow through with her plan.

A Close Call
The journey they went on had its risks. Once, while they were trying to cross the Hungarian border, some patrolmen spotted Nadia’s group. As Nadia and the others were being questioned, the patrolmen recognized Nadia, but promptly allowed her to go without a single word. Pretty scary to think how differently things could have turned out.
