Whatever the reason, she was confident that she would make it. A minor spoiler: she made it across. Her cubs, on the other hand, were not so fortunate. As previously stated, the bears may have starved to death, and crossing the lake was the only option. Nature may be wild, but there is always logic behind what we think is insane.
