Eldest sister Mary Ingalls was played by Melissa Sue Anderson. Anderson did not get along well with the castmates. Many of the stars said she came off as standoffish and even a bit aloof. Some excused her behavior, claiming she came from a very overprotective upbringing. However, Gilbert and Arngrim were especially not a fan of Anderson. They claimed she was mean and very stuck up.

Over the course of the show, Melissa Gilbert grew close to her costar, Michael Landon. Since Gilbert’s father died when she was only 11 years old, she saw Michael Landon as a father figure. As time went on, their feelings for each other continued to grow. However, things changed when Michael Landon decided to leave his wife for the makeup artist on set, Cindy Clerico. Clerico was 20 years his junior. After this, Gilbert was so angry with Landon, she began so distance herself from him and his family and then cut all contact.
