The next day was supposed to be the day that Animal Services would relieve Plucas of his duty. He couldn’t help but not feel relieved until they arrived to take the hurt calf. But then something unexpected happened, Animal Services told him that they couldn’t help him. But what was even worse was the solution they offered him.

Animal Services told Plucas to place a call to local hunters, explaining that they would deal with the calf. Only Plucas understood what that meant, and he was mortified with the possibility of the animal getting into the hands of the people who had killed her mother. He knew that keeping the animal was illegal, but he didn’t want to hand her over to the hunters.
