Young Talent
One day in kindergarten, the six-year-old Nadia Comăneci did some cartwheels on the school’s playground along with a friend. As the two children were absorbed in playing, they did not notice a few people watching them. They were Béla and Márta Károlyi, a married couple that were gymnastic coaches and the two went to the playground in order to scout for some young talent. As a matter of fact, the Károlyis went from classroom to classroom trying to get Nadia and her buddy to join the couple’s gym.

Béla Károlyi is a lifelong fan of sports and got his start in hammer throw, eventually becoming a champion hammer-thrower. Then, he decided to go into coaching and started with junior boxing. He only became involved in gymnastics when he met Márta Károlyi, his wife. They routinely scouted for new and young talent similar to Nadia.
